You no longer need a huge tower PC dominating your workspace to give your growing business the computing power it needs. The HP Compaq dc7900 Ultra-slim ($919 direct) desktop is a compact business PC that can crunch any number you can throw at it yet doesn't dominate your desk space. The dc7900 is an enterprise-grade model, with the corresponding IT benefits (though with the drawbacks as well). It's a better choice for balancing your books than the $500 consumer-grade PCs out there.

One of two new additions to Acer's Business Series line of desktop displays is a well-appointed 27-inch LCD monitor. The Acer B273HU ($409 list) does an outstanding job of displaying tiny fonts, and it delivers good color and dark grayscale performance too. Although it suffers from a few flaws, most notably its light grayscale performance, the B273HU offers business users an affordable alternative to a dual-monitor setup. And its ability to handle 3D gaming and display smooth HD video allows it to pull double duty as an entertainment monitor.

Every motherboard manufacturer now has their own Core i7 platform, although they pretty much all come in the same flavor. This market segment is very crowded and it seems like everything has been done before. As soon as a company comes up with something unique, the rest of the crowd shortly follows along with a similar feature. The i7 powered motherboards all sport the enthusiast X58 chipset and boast an equally enthusiatic price tag. With high end features such as triple channel DDR3 memory and support for both CrossFire and SLI, this isn't a platform for the faint of heart.
What we have today is truely different from what we are used too, although admitedly not unique. The Rampage II Gene is Asus' latest product out of the Republic of Gamers series. The RoG motherboards usually come in ATX and some even E-ATX format, but this one is a tiny mATX. Size matters, you say? Maybe not. The Gene is equipped with the usual six memory slots, a whole bunch of connectivity, X-Fi SupremeFX sound, CrossFire, SLI and the list goes on.

Manufacturers have been offering DDR3 memory for quite a while now, nearly two years to be exact. However, until recently, it used to be out of mostly everyone's budget. Now that both AMD and Intel have made the switch on their new processor line ups, DDR3 prices are constantly dropping while performance is better than ever.
Today we're taking a look at Mushkin's high performance mainstream triple channel DDR3 kit. These are PC3-12800 meaning they clock at 1600 MHz and carry pretty loose 9-9-9-24 timings. Those modules are rated to run between 1.5V and 1.6V, so they are well within the 1.65V limitation recommended by Intel on Core i7 processors.

Specifications:
1600MHz DDR3
CL 9-9-9-24 (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)
1.5-1.6 Volts
240 Pin DIMM
6GB (3X2048MB) T/C kit PN - 998659

Yep, it's the 'get an SSD or get an HDD?' question and MSI has come up with an innovative answer: BOTH! In officially announcing the 'U115 Hybrid' this week the company claims to have created a netbook which it believes will give users the best of both worlds - or battery life that is "super long" (yet unspecified), to use its own curious phrasing.

In essence how this works is simple. An 'ECO' mode enables users to switch off the HDD altogether and run on the more power efficient SSD when necessary. This can then be turned back on seamlessly when required. On the other hand, I have to question whether running both an SSD and an HDD in the first place isn't going to suck battery life more than usual - especially with MSI sticking to a piffling three cell battery?! We'll wait for our own tests before I completely damn it though.

Elsewhere the U115 Hybrid is pretty standard. The keyboard has had a re-jig to slightly increase the space between the keys and the finish on the touchpad has been improved but otherwise there's an Atom CPU, 1GB RAM, a 10in 1024 x 600 LCD, 2MP webcam, card reader, 3x USB 2.0 slots, WiFi and a 1Kg weight. Wireless n and Bluetooth v2.0 with EDR are optional extras as is the choice to boost the standard 8GB SSD and 120GB HDD to a 16GB SSD and 160GB HDD respectively.

I think hell may have just frozen over folks, as now NVIDIA has crossed over camps like a country western song getting popular on the rock-n-roll charts. NVIDIA has partnered up with AMD's competitor, better known as the Intel giant. This will seriously put a dent in AMD's current hold on the SLI market, as this levels the playing field for both companies in the SLI arena. In reality Intel needed a break as AMD has about earned them the right to stand toe-to-toe with Intel in the desktop and server market. The year 2004 was a very good one for AMD both in their chipset platform partners, their CPU releases and then to top it off the only game in town that played SLI. This release totally changes that advantage and only time will tell how much of an impact this will have in the long run for AMD at the cash register.

Intel has always made an outstanding CPU, well at least 98% of time anyways and that is what has made them a household name, that and those infernal blue men with the far out devices occupying my TV screen. The thing I wonder about now, will Intel try and integrate their latest 955 chipset features into a next generation Intel SLI boards or will NVIDIA just try and make a chipset platform that rival or surpasses Intel's soon to be market realized Dual-Core platform. This really is not a motherboard review per say as the board is a reference motherboard that features the same chipset that all the major manufacturers will be producing, so it is more of a chipset and platform review. NVIDIA has really started to put a name on their chipsets and now that they have added an entirely new platform support by way of Intel that can only grow stronger. So is SLI all that for Intel? I think anyone who is an Intel fan will find a breath of fresh air in this release as it once again makes Intel a viable choice for hardcore gamers, those who care less for price, and more about top performance in their machine.

Dell launched a new series of Inspiron desktops today geared toward personalization and style, with most aspects of the computer being completely customizable. With eight color choices, CPU options from AMD and Intel and a price point starting at $299, the systems are available in China today and the US later this spring.

The new Inspiron lines will be available in both minitower and slim/small form factor models, though each model will come equipped with one of eight different customizable fronts. Rather than introduce models with a single unique style, Dell is going in the complete opposite direction: the way the computer looks is up to the end consumer. The eight colors available are Piano Black, Pure White, True Blue, Formula Red, Tangerine Orange, Spring Green, Plum Purple, and Promise Pink. Dell teamed up with the Susan G. Komen foundation, so $5 from the sale of each Inspiron model with the Promise Pink option will go to fund breast cancer research.

Available processors run the complete gamut, with Celeron and Sempron options available on the low end and Core 2 Quad and Phenom X4 chips available on the higher end. Integrated Intel and ATI graphics are standard, with discrete ATI Radeons available as an upgrade. The systems max out at 8GB of RAM, with 750GB hard drives available in the slim tower and 1TB of storage available in the mini tower. Both models offer optional 19-in-1 media readers as well as HDMI out ports for use in HTPC situations in addition to six USB2.0 ports.
The slim tower is designed to run either horizontally or vertically, much like its smaller cousin, the Studio Hybrid, for home theater use; Blu-ray disc drives are also available (with an option for two units on the mini-tower). Much like the recent Studio One 19 launch, the new Inspiron desktops are available in China today, and the US later this spring. Configurations will start at $299.

REVIEW:
HP's purchase of Voodoo has resulted in the past in an Editors' Choice–winning gaming rig, the Blackbird 002, and the Voodoo Envy 133 subnotebook. The latest system to come out of this union is the HP Firebird with VoodooDNA 803 ($2,099 list). A high-powered gaming desktop, it has some unique attributes. For one, the rig's insides have several notebook-like characteristics, including switchable graphics—the first we've seen on a desktop. For another, its styling is distinctive, yet it has an HP/Voodoo family resemblance. Unfortunately, there are a few issues that could keep it from winning over the hard-core gamer, such as some disappointments with performance and limited upgradability. Still, this is not your father's gaming desktop. And for the more casual part of the gaming market, that's a good thing.
